While this method worked pretty well, albeit slow, in the begining as lists got bigger the flat file databases couldn't handle the server load and were upgraded to a MySQL database system.

Now a days leads are either obtained directly from people that are requesting information on a particular topic or from lead brokers that collect the leads themselves, verify that they are in fact double opt-in, catagorize them into targeted groups and then resell them to business owners that are offering a quality service. Lead brokers can be found all over the net, some are irresponsible and they use email harvesting software to gather the leads and then claim that they are double opt-in when they really aren't and some are reputable companies that offer a good product, true, certified double opt-in leads.
